'70 442 TH400...tail length?
When I bought my '70 442convertible the trans was missing. I know it's an OW code TH400, but I am not able to find any info on whether this particular TH400 was a long or short tailed trans. I have three different lengths showing on any website I've been to lately. I'm going to head out to get another OW TH400, but just want to get the one spec'd to the car. Thanks in advance for the help.

Only the big cars and wagons got the long-tail trans, the 442 and Cutlass use the short shaft. I have seen people use a long shaft in place of the short, obviously need driveshaft mods. If your having the trans rebuilt its easy to swap output shafts and extension housing.

I had a long shaft 400. I replaced front and rear seals, new filter, shift kit, new pan and gasket, new dipstick tube, painted it up nice and pretty. I had my drive line shortend and balanced. After getting all installed I realized there was no provision for a speedo cable. The 68 delta I pulled it from has the speedo going to the front wheel, so be carefull.

To clarify, flattop A-body wagons (with the same wheelbase as the four door cars) used the short tail. Only the extended wheelbase VC and Buick Sportwagons got long tail transmissions.
