higher stall converter with th200-4r on 1968 463 Cutlass
Hi All,
I have a question for recommendadions on what converter to buy on my setup.
I am form Poland and I have a 1968 cutlass with built by Mark R 462CUI engine which puts out about 535hp@5200 and 590-600ftlbs@3500-3600 (cam is 239/245@50 lift 0,565 on both, bigger valves 850CFM QF carb 10:1comp ratio
). Car has also a built 200-4r transmission with lock up, 3,73 posi rear end 245/50R15 tires (which may get bigger) and weighs 3850lbs. I use the car for normal drives, street use with fun and burnouts. The problem I have is the current converter. It was picked up by original transmission builer and it is a TCI unit, I think smaller than original in diameter, and it has to high stall for a street use. Even when I drive dynamically, like half the throttle it always climbes to about 3500rpm, and when I step on it it goes over 4k in stall. I would like to have a converter with a stall under 3k rpm, like 2500-2800rpm preferably.
Does any of you guys would have a recommendation for a torque converter for me? I contacted PTC shop twice via online form, but they didn't reply..

I’ll say it again: a well made quality converter won’t feel mushy on the street. A lockup converter once locked will drive EXACTLY like a stock converter.
Get with Hughes, BTE, Precision, Coan, and discuss what you need. The more information you have about the engine and the rest of the vehicle, the better. They can build a custom converter that will do exactly what you need and drive very well.

I use converters from PATC (transmissioncenter.net) and have been very happy with them. My current build is similar to yours and I have their "Mega Raptor 2" billet 10" with a 2800 stall. It's still a little mushy at very low throttle but it works well. You can get something better by calling a builder and have them make something custom for you, but it might cost twice as much and take quite a while to get built. I've previously used Ultimate Converter Concepts (https://www.ultimateconverter.com/) and their stuff is excellent.
