We have a bad Power Brake Booster on our 1955 Oldsmobile 98. Trying to figure out if it is a Bendix or a Moraine. We can't find a name on it. Any idea from the pictures, which it is. Thanks, Sandy

You can distinguish the difference between the two by putting a magnet on the body of the power booster . The Bindex unit is aluminum body and will not be attracted to the magnet, the Muriane will stick.... Tedd

Judging by the part number cast into it, I'd say it is a Moraine cylinder.

Maybe I’m having a senior moment here but I thought the Bendix dipstick had a triangular shaped open ring on the top.

Just get it rebuilt and you should be fine.

I don't think mine does, that is having a ring on the dipstick. Maybe we are sharing the same senior moment.... Tedd

I have a Moraine unit in mine. I sent it out for a rebuild years ago. My original had a flat blade dipstick, when I got it back it had the triangle dipstick that was pit marked on the stick. Whenever I check the brake fluid, I worry that the triangle will break, I put anti seize on the threads. So apparently either type dipstick will work. I sure wish I had my original back.

Hmmm. I think I got it, Tedd. My '56 has factory AC. You can't access (or even see) the power steering dipstick from the engine compartment. Too much stuff in the way. You have to take off the front wheel and open an access panel in the rear of the wheel well. Then you can reach in and get the dip stick. It's a very tight area and the dipstick handle is very short. Maybe that's why it has a ring on it. I'm going to go with that answer anyway!

I have two Bendix units and they both have this dip stick. But mine are both 57's. If it means anything.

I found this old picture, which I think is a spare for the 55 S88. You can see the Bendix name cast in the aluminum portion as well, along with the triangular dipstick.

55 thru 58 are interchangeable. I did it on my 58 olds years ago
