41 Ignition Coil Removal
Hello. My first post. Looking for some help.
I have a 1941 Olds 66. Original flathead 6 and still 6-volt. I think it needs a new coil. The old shop manual calls for a special tool to remove the cap from the existing coil. From the picture, this special tool looks to be just a flat piece of metal slightly curved to match the coil. Does anyone know if this tool is available? Is it really needed? Could I just make one from a piece of sheet metal? Also, where could I possibly find a replacement coil? All the ones I've been able to find on the Web are the type that have an exterior terminal for connecting the wire from the ignition switch. Thanks.

Welcome,
Do you know how to post pictures here? Pics worth 1000 words. At minimum post a pic of the cap/coil and pics from the service manual.
Something from that era we need some pictures to offer help...at least I do. Unless some of the older than me crowd knows this?
Do you have a volt meter and an inline spark tester? Id suggest getting both to troubleshoot verses throwing parts at it.

A small knife blade between the coil body and the cap in the right place will unlock the cap so it can be turned slightly and pulled off the coil.
The wire lead from the cap can then be disconnected from the coil.
These type coils do eventually pop up sporadically.
Here's one;
