Removing convertible top cylinders

Removing convertible top cylinders
Good morning all,
I have a question on removing and replacing the convertible top hydraulic cylinders.
My car is a 1968 442 convertible.
My question, does the top have to up, and secured to the lock downs at the windshield, to remove the cylinders? Reading thru the service manual, it sounds like that is one of the first steps?
Thanks for the help in advance, and feel free to send on any other information that might make my R&R go smooth.
My plan is to replace the cylinder and all the lines....maybe the pump while I am at it.
Cheers,
