In the trunk of my 1966 Toronado, the hole for the access to the fuel sending unit is wide open. Is there supposed to be a sheet metal cover over top of that which is missing? I checked the manuals and parts catalogs and I don't see any cover.....am I missing something?
That's not intended for access to the sender, it's just a drain hole for when the body was run through the primer dip tank before painting. There should be a sheet metal cover over that, installed from the top and closed out with seam sealer.
So it isn't screwed in (just sealed in)? I only ask as there appears to be screw mounting holes in the picture you posted. Can you still get replacements for these if I am unable to find mine?
It's screwed in in addition to the seam sealer to prevent water or exhaust leakage.
That's interesting. The car has no prexisting holes for those screws in the trunk. Maybe it was just sealed in place and forgotten to be screwed in at the factory. I guess I could make something up to cover it properly.

Actually, I suspect the plate in the trunk was only glued in with seam sealer to preclude the chance that the screws would puncture the gas tank. I've seen the ones in the floorpans use screws.
