1967 Oldsmobile 98 WHEEL FELL OFF ON I-24

So there I was.......

I bought a 67 98 4 door off good ole c-list in Atlanta.

flew down there cheap and was on my way

Good
-Dash
-tires
-heating/ac

Rough
-body

Anyway I bought it pretty much site unseen after the previous owner said "everything works" he'd put it in writing that it would get me to Saint Louis.

I was thinking, alright, I'll have everything I need for my convertible project.

400 miles later just the KY side of I-24 I feel a vibration.

I backed off it and coasted down the shoulder.

Saw that there was an exit in 2 miles

1.9 miles later my wheel falls the F^&* off

and of course it was the drivers front

and of course it took the bearing cap with speedo connection with it.

Found each wheel to have 4 lug nuts

found no jack baseplate and no jack handle/lug wrench, however I did find 2 4-ways

got it back together with some quick engineering and 3 lug nuts per wheel

limped into southern Illinois late that night

found the bearing cap and hubcap

cap is smashed

oh and the clock, radio, doesn't work at all, and heating/AC doesn't work quite right.

But hey still had fun.

Where can I get a new(to me) bearing cap

Man - what an adventure!! What exactly caused the wheel to come off? Lug nuts come off? I had a control arm bolt break once and the wheel almost came off.
Glad you got it rigged for the ride home and that noone was hurt.
Just need some parts now.

Reminds me of my adventure driving my newly-acquired SX convertible home about 11 hours from western Illinois (Ottawa) to W. PA in September 2003. Had a great drive with the top down for several hours until it got dark and cold. Made it within 90 miles of home when the driver's side front wheel bearing started making hellacious noise and burned up near Youngstown, OH. It was 1:00 a.m. and my cell battery was pretty much dead, and it was COLD out. After about 30 minutes an Ohio state trooper stopped and called a rollback which got me and the car home to my garage. Good times! On the plus side, AAA Plus paid for itself again. ; )

Hey Dru: Congratuations on getting your new ride home. Getting there is just a part of the adventure! By the way... None of the clocks ever worked. Oldsmobile just put them in for show. You can find almost anything you need for your car (execpt for wheel well trim) here on Classic Oldsmobiles dot com.

I think the wheel came off because the car had new studs put in it when it had a recent brake job, so I can certainly understand what happened. I was a little disappointed to find 4 lugs on the remaining 3 wheels. But I've been in worse with less, so all ended well.

Wheel well trim???

The speedo drive/grease caps sell on Ebay on occasion. This recent one did not sell, perhaps you can contact the seller:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1963-...Q5fAccessories

This one was an even better deal :

Why would olds make a passenger side driven speedo? And why would the cap be different on that side?

I have to admit, I did not drill down to that part of the auction description: the seller is simply mistaken about it being for the passenger/RH side.
