rear diff info

OK ... Let me see if I can weed through this...

IF you have a 1972 posi 3.42 you most likely have a 10 bolt 8.5 rear from a cutlas or skylark

NOW if your putting 3.23 into it (8.5) you will not need to change the carrier.

IF you are using a 7.5 the carrier breaks are 2.14-3.08 2 series and 3.23 -4.56 are 3 series carrier gears.

NOW if you want to use 3.23 GM gears on a 2 series carrier you can use a 7.5 ring gear spacer kit with correct length bolts included. ( I have these kits also for 45.00)
The aftermarket does sell 3.23 thick gears to fit the 2 series carrier also.

Yes you can get a 3 series carrier from any 1976-1988 camaro s-10 malibu monte carlo all with 26 spline axles. YOU can aslo use the 1989-2003 7.6 newer units in your 7.5 housing with no other modifications other than the 28 spline axles sold in the after market.

Good luck with the choice, Jim

Wink HELP MY REAREND!!!

thanx monzaz!!yes its the 7.5,when i bought the car these parts came w/it[3.23 gearset,403]i thought the gears were richmond, but after research, they appear 2 b gm .theres only GM stamped on them ,and number of teeth.when i looked up the part #on the richmond box, its 4.56 for 7.5...WOW,whos walkin home tonite!!??these appear 2 b the gears that came out,so yes, ill need a ring spacer to install ,but i dont know if ill spend any on 7.5.if i do ,ill let you know.the cars 83 cutlass ,307,350,2.14[that sucks]but i have 403 and 8.5 /3.42 clutch type, what do you think of them??[you seem 2 b in the know]i took it out of my 72,455/400 to now 3.73/locker ,when it started slipping. i already know about UMI uppers and width diff .im really leaning toward 455[i love them]again thanks ,ill look you up in future.later BO
