Question New Stereo for '84 Olds 98 Regency Brougham

Hi All,

I recently purchased an '84 98 Regency with a Delco ETR AM/FM Cassette deck, and I'd like to swap this out for a new stereo. I've done lots of searching and the most I've been able to learn is how to remove the front panel and that I probably need a 1.5 DIN size stereo - can anyone verify that? I'd like to do the installation myself, and don't want to have to cut or modify the existing panel. Can it be done, especially without spending an arm and a leg?

Cheers,
Kyle

Wink Stereo Instalation

Check with Radio Shack they sell a assortment of faceplates & mounting hardware Also get the new plug from them so you dont have to cut the factory harness

Thanks for the advice, ozoneblue, I'll check them out. Thing is, there's no way the opening in the current panel is wide enough for a CD, which has me worried. I'll wait to see what the say, unless anyone out there has dealt with the same issue.

Cheers,
Kyle

I notched my dash out on my 85 delta, no big deal. They made so many of those you could find another dash if you ever wanted to convert back. Once you have your new bada$$ stereo in you won't even care about the dash anymore anyway. Bluebook value on an 84 regency is probably 700 bucks if you had every option and 30000 miles on her. My insurance company wanted to total my car out for 6 or 700 hundred bucks a few years ago after someone backed into my door at Best Buy. It only had 70000 on it so I obviously told them to get bent and just put another door on from the boneyard. My neighbor just recently backed into THAT door and I can't say I'm thrilled. Anyway, If I remember correctly on my dash the volume and am/fm selector **** along with the R/L balance rings, pulled right off. There were 2 screws above the cigarette lighter and the faux wood panel pulled right off of a few clips. Worst case scenario you break it and can only find a panel without the rear defog cutout and have to move the switch elseware. 99.99% unlikely though.

i have the same car. i had to cut the dash where the old stereo was either that or you need to mount it under the ash tray. One problem i ran into though is that the power antenna doesn't go up and down now. I think I need to change my wiring a bit. I can post some pictures if you would like but you are just going to have to find the stereo you want and make your cuts precisley. Behind the plastic dash there is a steel mounting bracket that you attatch the new stereo mount to. you need to make sure that your mounting on the steel bracket lines up with the plastic dash cutout for the stereo. hope it helps if anyone knows how to get the antenna to work i would appreciate it.

heres why my antenna is broken and just runs and runs

If that ETR unit works and looks good, lemme know if you want to sell it.

Yah, I'm one of them dinosaurs who still has cassettes and vinyl. The stuff works, some of it is impossible to replace on CD, and I'm comfortable with it.

You MIGHT be able to get a faceplate from an 86-90 Custom Cruiser. Think they have a large opening that you can use an installation kit with. Can't guarantee the woodgrain will match the 84 though. A wiring harness adapter is easily found. Scosche and Metra both make them.

Juast go to Crutchfield.com and they have the stereos, illustrated instructions, installation kits, and they'll walk you through any aspect over the phone.
You can plug in your model of car on the site and it will bring up everything that fits it too.

The Delta is designed for a twin-shaft radio. Good luck finding an aftermarket one of those these days. If you remove the plastic dash panel, you'll see that the radio is retained with a metal plate that bolts to the dash carrier. You can cut this metal plate to support the new radio and then trim the front panel to match. Be sure to reinstall the rear support on the radio or you'll eventually crack the plastic dash carrier.

If all you want is a CD, consider a remote changer like I have in mine. It plugs into the antenna feed on the stock radio and has a remote control that you can mount anywhere. No cutting required.
