I recently acquired a set of nice used (not repop) 70 442 grilles. The only problem is that somewhere along the line someone painted them gloss black with what must have been a rattle can. Some of the paint is flaking off but how do I get it all off without ruining the original finish?

Brake fluid ??? Test a spot unseen to see if the original finish is affected, water will desolve the fluid. have a hose on the ready. Good luck

I would try a paint remover on a test spot and see how that works. You will likely have to sand everything anyway and re-paint so it might be feasible to just sand smooth the existing paint and refinish. My non-professional opinion.

I have had good luck removing paint using oven cleaner. It is mostly lye in a sprayable can. It should not attack the plastic. Spray it on, leave it on 8 to 12 hours and wash with a high pressure water.

After you strip the paint you can use krylon dull aluminum spray paint to reproduce the original color. It's a dead on match.

they make a spray bomb can with rubber/plastic stripper in it. You have to get it from a paint supplier..

its slow as heck..but the secret is to lay a piece of plastic down put the grill in the center spray it...and wrap the plastic all around it to seal it..it keeps the chemicals "hot"..its pretty mild but will burn skin...works best at 70-80 degrees
