Transmission

Just realized my 69 442 has a Pontiac turbo 400 in it and not the number matching original. The rest of the car is number matching. Should I try to locate a matching transmission? Car runs great, but disappointed that it’s not the original transmission.

The only “matching transmission” would be the one that came with the car from the factory and has the same VIN as the engine and body The odds of finding that one single transmission are astronomical.

I wouldn't bother searching hi and low for a transmission with an Oldsmobile tag on it. Concours restorations are a daunting task. Are you going to run bias play tires?

Yes, you have a slim chance, but the odds are greater in finding it than winning the Mega Millions or the Powerball lotteries.

Enjoy your car and don't be concerned about the transmission not being original. If you come across a correct one grab it, if you come across the original one from your car change your username to Lucky Dog. FWIW, I was recently checking on a car from a classic muscle car sales center for potential purchase and asked if the transmission was original. The seller said that almost no one asks about the transmission being original by #'s but many ask about the engine. He was very willing to check it though and it was the original.

Money and time would probably be better spent on other parts of your car plus you can modify the Pontiac transmission as you like without concern because it isn't original.

Drive on!!!!

You have a better chance of seeing Aliens..that trans was changed more than like because it went bad..its gone.. Strictly my opinion here so I would say numbers matching is only important and adds value if the car is a low production, highly desirable rare car..Things like w30’s, HO, ram air 4 GTO, Super Duty TA , LS6 Chevelle etc.
