edelbrock manifold on stock 350?
ok i have a stock 72 cutlass..with a 2bbl carb. I was gonna buy edelbrock manifold 3711.. but i was readin on jegs.com that i can buy that manifold but any edelbrock acrd would not fit on it... does anyone know if this is true?? pls help.. i wanna put a 4bbl edelbrock carb

Lemme make sure I've got this right: Jegs says Edelbrock carbs won't fit on Edelbrock intakes???? When they say "any Edelbrock carb (acrd?) would not fit," they might be trying to say SOME Edelbrock carbs (Thunder/AVS Series?) might need an adapter plate for certain Edelbrock intakes - or something like that. If you're just looking for a bit more performance from a 2bbl to 4bbl conversion and not a 400-plus hp monster engine, I'd suggest the manifold you're looking at (Performer) with the Edelbrock Performer Series carb #1406. That's a 600cfm vac. secondary, square bore, electric choke carb; nothing too fancy. The average Rochester Q-jet would also work, although the Edelbrock carbs generally require less maintenance; the Performer intake/1406 carb combo would basically be a bolt 'em up and go set-up. When using the 1406 carb, certain Edelbrock intakes are not RECOMMENDED (which doesn't mean they won't fit). The 1406 is not recommended for any Edelbrock intake other than the Performer or Performer EPS; I have no idea what the Performer EPS is.

IIRC, the problem is that the linkage hits something, perhaps the egr boss. But, either a slight tweaking or better yet a 4 hole spacer fixes it. But, I would go with a Q-jet over the E-brock carb. Better mileage and performance, IMO.

the 3711 edelbrock intake to my understanding has the small primaries and larger secondaries like the intake that would be seen under rochester 4 barrel carb
all you have to do is use a spacer made by edelbrock that converts the large and small ports into 4 same sized ports
they even sell the spacer at kragen i got mine for about 40 dollars i think

Correct. The carb flange is designed to accept both square bore and spread bore carbs. The Qjet-to-square bore adapter plate will hurt airflow so much that you'll negate any advantage of a new carb or manifold. DO NOT use one.

i used the adapter on my cutlass when my rochester carb was leaking to put an edelbrock on and it was very nice afterwards i only used the adapter because i didnt have the money to buy a performer at the time

Spacers can be used to move your power band around. If you raise your carb up it acts like a higher rise manifold. An open spacer will give a boost to the mid to higher range power. The 4 hole spacer will work more with the low to mid range.

That's correct, but the typical Qjet-to-square bore adapter is convoluted and a flow restriction, in my opinion. I'd start with the correct manifold if at all possible.

I just completed this exact conversion last week and it is true...the #1406 carb is NOT a bolt on to the #3711 manifold! The EGR boss does get in the way as someone stated earlier. However, a 1 1/4 inch spacer will do the trick with a little filing of the boss edge also. It made a very positive improvement in power, idle quality, and efficiency. My only suggestion when installing the manifold would be to use the rubber end seals supplied with the intake gasket kit. Edelbrock, for whatever reason, reccomends not using them and filling in w/RTV black. The rubber end seals keep the manifold in position high enough (ever so slightly), that the intake bolts go in at the proper angle and prevent cross threading. I did the same conversion 6 years ago to my 72 Cutlass 350 and haven't experienced any problems whatsoever by using the rubber end seals!

Nothing to add about carbs and intake fitment.
Is this an AC car or not? I have seen the Torker intakes on Big block cars mis-align the alternator bracket for the non-AC cars because the screw boss is too high. Not sure if this is across the board on the Edelbrocks...
Just one more thing to think about.

thanks for all your inputs.. im no mechanic i just know the basics.. but i even emailed someone from edelbrock and he confirmed that i coudnt use a edelbrock carb with that 3711 intake manifold... btu Nohn.. i like your set up.. thats the way i wanted mine to be...^^^ so u are saying i just need an adapter and it will work okay?? what kind of adapter? whaere do i get it from?

Joker is absolutely right, that mani will accept a square bore carb. I believe your question was about the #1406 which does not bolt right on. The problem is the accel linkage on the carb. The EGR boss interferes. IT CAN BE DONE with the proper height spacer. 1 1/4 inches should do the trick and not give a hood to aircleaner clearence problem. Why edelbrock doesn't just explain this I don't know? They could probably sell more #1406's.

If you are interested in purchasing an Edelbrock carb why don't you just use the Edelbrock intake and carb that are made for each other? Edelbrock sells the carb and manifold as a set. I believe they are marketed as the Power Package.

They do offer that but not with the performer 350 SBO intake. Edelbrock recommends use original carb ( most likely quadra-jet). With some simple ingenuity though, you could make just about any 4-barrel work, including an edelbrock which is really if I'm not mistaken a WEBER.

ok.. thank you guys. for uor opinions.. this is my first time delaing with a classic car.. dealing with a carburetor.. im new to this.. som im buying the manifold and the carb..one last question.. manual or electric choke? ive done some research.. i kinna want a manual but what u guys think?

electric choke all the way....easy to install...just two wires which come with the carb...ground the black to a screw on the choke housing itself, and run the power wire directly to an accessory spot on the fuse block!
