‘57 Super 88 Radio Removal

Hello. I’m trying to remove the radio so I can get the instrument cluster off of the car in order to finish an upholstery job we’re doing. I’m not having any luck. It’s chrome and I don’t see a set screw so I was just hoping someone could help me figure out how to get this thing off.

Thanks,
Hogan

I removed the panel up until the radio and I can’t get the instrument panel off until the radio piece comes off.

This is the other side of the radio from underneath. I can’t really loosen anything back here and I’m unsure if it’s gonna be alright to unscrew that flathead screw. But it’s the only thing I see that I can do anything with.

You need to remove the ***** and behind them the nuts that hold the radio to the dash. Then slide the radio to the rear until the shafts clear and drop it out.

I believe the radio ***** are held to each post w/ a set screw. You may need a fine dental pick and/or a tooth brush to remove ~80 years of dust/grime to view ea. set screw.

I don't remember any set screws on the 54 I had. It has little springs inside the **** that put pressure against the shaft. Look real close and if you don't find any set screws, you are going to have to pull them off. I suspect they are almost seized onto the shaft as long as they have been on there. Once the ***** are off, it is a piece of cake like Eric described.

Ah. I know exactly the type you're referring to. You may be right.

My '55 had set screws and those little spring washers. I am pretty sure those are there to make sure you don't mount the ***** too tight against the secondary ***** for tone and distance. Once you get the ***** off, it will be straightforward to remove the nuts, the chrome faceplate, then the radio stem nuts.

If your 55 had set screws, then I am sure the 54 had them also. It has been a long time since I changed the radio.
