Oil filter question
Doing an oil change on a 1957 golden rocket 88 and having a lot of difficulty getting the oil filter housing back in place. I get a few good turns but then it gets very tough. The housing also seems to not line up correctly suggesting the bolt is going in crooked. I don’t have a lift so laying on my back on my garage floor is the scenario, making it difficult to see how it lines up.
I don’t want to end up cross threading it, and it doesn’t want to really “want” to be hand tightened. And ideas?

Make sure you got the old square-cut o-rings out of the recess in the block. Sometimes those will make it difficult to get the cartridge housing lined up right. Or did on the 60 and 67 Chevrolets I had that had cartridge filters.
One thing I would do is leave the housing off and try threading the bolt in. That will tell you if it's threading in ok.
Don't know if such is still made but after a couple of times fooling with those 283s I installed spin-on filter conversion kits on them.
The best thing GM ever did was get rid of those canister and cartridge oil filters. I would love to convert my Ferguson tractor to a spin-on if there were a kit to do it.

If you just stick the canister on the base supported by only the bolt and without centering it (gravity will cause it to drop out of center ) this could cause the out of alignment issue you describe, also a nasty leak will occur...Tedd
