Spin on adapter (oil)

Looking to convert my (1957 88) oil filter to a spin-on application and just wondering if anyone has done a similar conversion and what is the best kit for the job?

Go to ebay and post a parts wanted ad here for an adapter for a 63 or 64. It is a lot better than the adapter kits.

Thanks! Anything else I should know, or is it a straight up swap? 371 V8 if that matters

What Glenn said, easy-peasy direct swap. I still run the canister just because I have a case of filters, but I do have one adapter waiting in the wings when I run out of my shelf stuff... Tedd

I've got a 1959 394 for parts. Will that spin on filter adaptor fit the OP's 1957 371?

I think it does but not sure.apparently 63 and 64 are to go to years but I’ve heard any later 394 bolts to a 371… I’m not sure

I just want to thank all you guys for responding. For something as simple as this might sound, I’m on the younger side of the age demographic and very new to classic Oldsmobiles (made the mistake of thinking GM is GM 🤷‍♂️) so any help is very much appreciated!

You have come to the right place for help. Some of us old gray haired guys know a little bit and some of the guys know a lot. Oldsmobiles are not Chevys and remember there are no dumb questions. Dumb is not asking a question when you need to. Good luck with your car.

I just thought I should add that my 371 has the extended capacity oil pan, the one that has an extra can welded to the side? Just wondering if this will cause clearance issues.

the other user who mentioned having one shows it mounted at a downward 45 degree angle and mine points straight back

This is my oil filter canister mount just above the extended capacity part of my oil pan. Bad pic I know Is it possible to do the swap with the motor still in the car? I have no idea how I would access the bolts that mount it

I can't tell much from the picture and my 54 did not have that but I don't think it should be a problem.

With the extra capacity pan I don't think this would fit. It looks to me like the tube like pan extension would be in the way of the filter. OP, can you try getting a photo from the top?

Well, there is an option. It is the conversion of you current adapter to a spin on filter. I don't like these as much as the later adapter but they work if installed correctly. The will position the filter just like the cannister you now have. Here is one on ebay.

This is the adapter I have. When it came, the surface wasn't true. I got it flat, and seals just fine. Just a little it of work.
