Will 1968 Cutlass Column Shift Steering columns from 2 spd or 3 spd interchange
I think I squeezed the whole question into the title! I know the floor shifters have different detents. But am not sure if a 2 speed column could be used in a 3 speed swap without changing something in the column like the detent. Can anybody shed some light on this one?

The problem with using a 2 spd detent on a 3 spd trans is that you won't get the proper detent alignment, obviously. You have to be very careful when you shift to feel the detent pop into place in the trans, and you run the risk of bumping the shift lever (or just road vibration), causing the trans lever to move. With the column and trans detent locations fighting each other, it's possible for the trans detent to be in between gears, not a desirable condition.

Joe, I run a T400 on my 2spd column. The detents lock in place and the only issue is second gear is between L and D obviously. There is no chance of it dropping out of gear due to any reason other than me moving it there. The column determines where park and neutral are, the trans determine the rest.
